When should I bring in the copyeditor and proofreader?

In simple terms — as soon as possible!

But we should qualify that. Obviously, you need to write your material first and ensure that it is drafted in a way that fulfils your wishes with regard to content and sequence. But once you have arrived at that point, then is the time to consider bringing in your specialist. Don’t wait until the last minute! Importantly, this should be before you send anything to your layout artist to start configuring how your project will actually look. If your copyeditor makes changes to your draft text, this could well have a knock-on effect on the way it is laid out in the finished version. Rather than incurring avoidable costs with late layout changes, polish up your draft first while it is still in an easily editable form.

IMPORTANT! Remember — the work of the copyeditor or proofreader is NOT a substitute for playtesting – your game must be tried out on actual gamers to ensure that it functions correctly and as you want it to do.
